Théophile de Bascher

Background

Théophile de Bascher graduated from ENSAD in 2023 with a degree in object design. A designer and sculptor, he is drawn to gesture and is interested in the influence of working with materials on the creative process. His world was shaped by his experiences in workshops, notably with Matéo Garcia and in the stone-cutting workshop of the Lefèvre company. While working with stone he established a relationship between sculpture and object design.

Signature

Théophile de Bascher’s approach is based on careful observation and a sensitive connection with the material. For Theoreme Edition, he went in search of a raw material for his sculptural series and found fragments of brick architecture from the ancient city of Le Havre, almost entirely destroyed by the bombardments of the Second World War. These remains, washed out to sea, have undergone 80 years of natural erosion. The movement of the tides has polished them, transforming these pieces of history into strange brick pebbles. The shapes of the objects in the Fracas series derive directly from these pebbles. In direct, instinctive and spontaneous carving the object reveals itself gesture by gesture.

Inspiration

Designer and sculptor Théophile de Bascher is attracted by gesture and the influence of working with materials during the creative process. Artists such as Isamu Noguchi and Constantin Brancusi have abolished the boundaries between sculpture and utilitarian objects. Their approach enabled Théophile to free himself from a rational vision of the object and develop a more intuitive and sensitive approach.

The Fracas centerpiece is a unique piece hand-sculpted from ocean eroded wall fragments of brick and concrete.

In direct carving, without the use of preparatory sketches, De Bascher’s instinctive and spontaneous gesture unveils the object within the eroded stone itself.

This large centerpiece reminds the shape of a shell with its soft curves and sharp edges.

The Fracas centerpiece is a unique piece hand-sculpted from ocean eroded wall fragments of brick and concrete.

In direct carving, without the use of preparatory sketches, De Bascher’s instinctive and spontaneous gesture unveils the object within the eroded stone itself.

This large centerpiece reminds the shape of a leaf with its soft curves and sharp edges.
